The existence of biochemical signaling in the environment between plants and trees was not well known until a few years ago. A study by Heidi Apple at the University of Toledo found that plants only release defensive chemicals in response to sounds of predators. The best guess we have is that plants have little hairs on their leaves, just like the cilia in your ears that are letting you listen to me right now. And also it suggests that this discernment is in the genetic code.
