When Chen Shui Bien was running for re-election in 2004, Annette Liu remained his running mate and just prior to the vote, they were both shot in a rally in Tainan. Fortunately, they survived. And thanks to the outcome of the 2000 presidential election, this long time political dissident and crusader for women's rights became the vice president of China.
