How Did the Chagos Expulsions Work?

Liz B. Elise was 20 years old in the spring of 1973 when she encountered a white person on her island, Peros Banios. She was informed by that person that she would have to leave the next day, and she could take one suitcase with her. So it was a forcible deportation of the entire population of that island. That was about 400 people who'd been living there for generations. The deportations were replicated across the whole of the Chagos Archipelago over a four or five year period.
