Clifton House is an 800 year old house in Portland. It's the most wonderful, delightful thing you could possibly imagine - to live in a very old and beautiful building. Keeping warm is not always straightforward; we use space heaters or electric blankets. But they keep me very warm and they're very sustainable. They're very low carbon, but they're not cheap. And do you have a dishwasher? We didn't for a long time because my husband, his bits of puritanicals, said that he thought we shouldn't. He's pretty grateful now.

Anna Keay is a historian who specializes in the cultural heritage of Great Britain. As the director of the Landmark Trust, she has overseen the restoration of numerous historical buildings and monuments, while also serving as a prolific author and commentator on the country's architectural and artistic traditions. Her book, The Restless Republic: Britain Without a Crown, was one of Tyler’s top picks for 2022.
