We can actually study individual stars and galaxies outside the milky way, which really surprises some people. We tend to think of other galaxies as te sort of little, pretty spiral pictures. And in reality, we can pin point and study individual stars in nearby galaxies very well. It means that i'm using some of the largest telescopes that we have available to us. So telescopes with mirrors that are six, eight, ten meters from end to end.
