The Importance of a New European Union
In 2003, I became aware that the source of contemporary Europe's commitment to human rights was classical heritage and Socrates. The ferocity of this argument suggested that something more was going on here than a deliberate act of historical amnesia. Secularism in its most stringent control was by means of this preem, to be subtly declared to be the official ideology of the new European Union. It seemed a very strange business. This proposal to erect a living political community around not only a hollow shrine, but a shrine that would be kept deliberately scoured of any transcendent moral reference points.
