As an undergrad at Stanford, I'd been majorly interested in linguistics. But for what I then saw at Xerox Park, really I saw two very different things there and that was sort of very formative actually. NLP started in the 50s with work on machine translation, but it grew with symbolic knowledge-based AI of the 60s, 70s and 80s where people were building rule-based systems. It's a new empirical way to ground things and start to apply machine learning.
