Ramesses III was quite a strong pharaoh who guided the country through a difficult time, but ultimately became the victim of the facts that times had changed. Ramesses IV was only the pharaoh for 6 and a half years. In fact, there was a procession of very short reigns. Eight men would assume the role of Pharaoh of Egypt within a 52 year period,. Each of them would be called Ramesses. The third intermediate period saw more localised rule than previously. High priests of Amun effectively governed the lands of upper Egypt from the power base at Thebes while lower Egypt was ruled out of tainess by new dynasty whose origins are unknown.
