Loneliness is more dangerous than smoking 15 cigarettes a day and more closely linked to our mortality than smoking and obesity. Where are all the campaigns telling us it's desperately important for our health to make friends? Well, I know, so we're primates and we're gregarious and we need social grooming. And there's no solitary primate out there. But obviously this is going to hurt us to be feel that fear of being alone and truly being,. even if you haven't been ostracized, you're still getting the emotional responses that you would. We want to connect to people. We don't want to be alone.
On this episode, we welcome journalist Kate Leaver to talk about her new book The Friendship Cure in which she explores the crippling, damaging, life-threatening impact of loneliness and the severe mental health impacts of living a life disconnected from a support network of close contacts. But...there is a cure...learning how to connect with others and curate better friendships.
In the interview we talk about loneliness, how to make friends, the difference between male and female friendship, platonic friendships, friends with benefits and lots, lots, more.
