The gambling industry provides a large source of revenue for Australia's broadcast networks with a total of $310 million spent by the sector in 2022. Responsible wagering Australia, which represents some of the country's biggest bookmakers, including sports betting and lead breaks, welcomed the proposal. FreeTV CEO Bridget Fair said the proposed ban was based on a flawed premise that the advertising market was some kind of magic pudding. She went on to say services are available to every Australian, no matter where they live or how much they earn and are only possible because of advertising revenue. TabCorp also welcomed the proposal after previously joining advocates in supporting a total ban on broadcast advertising.
