In most primitive societies, male social status is determined by your ability to bring back food and share it with one's allies and family members. When a chief had a man killed for an offence, or murdered out of revenge or hatred or sacrificed, he added the head to his collection as a fresh sign of his power and greatness. In nigeria, a young man was considered no better than a girl until he had obtained his head in the prescribed manner and his prowess had been celebrated by a public feast. After the feast, he was considered a man and a warrior.
