The Martyr Made Podcast

CHAPTER

The Hibaro and the Head Hunting Trophy

In most primitive societies, male social status is determined by your ability to bring back food and share it with one's allies and family members. When a chief had a man killed for an offence, or murdered out of revenge or hatred or sacrificed, he added the head to his collection as a fresh sign of his power and greatness. In nigeria, a young man was considered no better than a girl until he had obtained his head in the prescribed manner and his prowess had been celebrated by a public feast. After the feast, he was considered a man and a warrior.
