After the Civil War, former Confederates were barred from holding federal positions. The 14th Amendment was ratified in 1864 and allowed them to run for office. People's Sight has been challenging this right since then with a free speech campaign. They say there is no precedent for an ex-Confederate being able to hold on to his or her seat at government offices.
