The Forces of Enchantment in Children's Learning

When toddlers put a rock in their mouth, that is them trying to learn, and they're loving it. So when we're thinking about learning English, studying phonics or spelling or reading, how can I base this experience in one of the forces of enchantment? How can I add an element of surprise or mystery or risk or adventure to the teaching of eating? Should I wrap the brand new reader in wrapping paper and have my child open it like a present? Or maybe it's just something as simple as cuddling up on the couch with you and having that private dedicated time where they are not going to be interrupted by someone else.
