Why Are Opossums Living So Long?

Opossums were a perfect animal for testing an evolutionary theory about when females should have a preponderance of male offspring versus female offspring. They struck my interest almost immediately because of the prevailing idea in the field at the time, which was called the rate of living theory. But then i started thinking about, wa, let's see, the marsupials have a metabolic rate of basil resting metabolic rate that's about 70 % of that of non pouched mammals. So it wasn't even the behavior that i was interested in, but something entirely different.
