On December 24, 1989, 100 fighters moved over the border from Kote Duvoir to attack government officials and soldiers in Nimbah County. Several groups of rebels had infiltrated the country and gone to pre-arrange points including in Monrovia. Government forces arrested some 20 suspected infiltrators inMonrovia,. There was a firefight at a marketplace in the capital which went unreported on the radio. Then the murders started. This was the start of a steady stream of murders marked by the appearance of headless corpses in the morning.
