Naming what we're experiencing allows the parts of our brain that are feeling really activated. When we are self-compassionate, there's a sense in which we are learning to be with ourselves in our pain. And it's even a step further than just being kind to ourselves. The other one is called common humanity and this is the idea that as people, all of us experience pain.
