Phyllis McAlpine Stewart was born on August 15, 1924 in St. Louis,. Her mother, Dottie, came from a moderately prominent family and unusually for the area, had both a bachelor's degree and a two-year certification in library science. She met and married Bruce Stewart, a heavy equipment salesman for Westinghouse, which are the guys who made typewriters along with a bunch of other stuff.
