The Moral Question in Utilitarianism

In the modern West, at least in the world of philosophy faculties, goodness has been reduced to a utilitarian calculus. To call something good is to say that it brings happiness to the larger number of people. Goodness, we are ticking them off, aren't we, rather? The moral question in utilitarianism is, would he be justified in doing so? I imagine most of us think this would be a disaster in terms of our relationships with the medical profession, if not with ourselves and the world altogether.
