Mao Zedong sent millions of urban youth to learn from peasants about the glory of hard work. Xi Jinping was sent to a village where conditions were incredibly austere and simple. He couldn't handle it, basically, and ran back to Beijing; he was caught and put in a labor camp. This time in the village was this moment of rejuvenation when he decided to commit himself to the Communist Party.
