The Rite of Spring

A screech in the upper winds and a slam in the percussion ends the piece. No composer wrote music like this after Stravinsky. The Rite of Spring did liberate the idea of rhythm as being dependent on melody. Beethoven flipped the equation so that rhythm now could drive the harmony. This was where the Rite really had its influence.
