The Evolution of General Relativity

When Einstein came up with his general theory of relativity, this was during the war, 1915. Many physicists in other countries only found out about it after the end of the first world war. When general relativity took off after the war, you had mathematicians getting interested in mathematics as a theory. Now we're owing to these fantastic developments in telescopes and numerical simulations that astronomers and cosmologists can really look back to very early stages of the universe. So we have opened up a whole new window on the universe - which is why I say 'it's a hot, hot, hot time'
