I've always loved this argument that African-Americans in many ways, they're not so much peripheral to America, they are in many ways the essential Americans in so many ways. I don't want to forget how bad slavery was and how important the civil rights movement was, but you can become so obsessed with the history that it becomes an excuse for not giving your all in the here and now. Well, especially if the telling of the history is a cherry-picked version that only pulls out the most egregious negative examples of behavior of the US government and populace.
