There is a tendency to marginalize these intermediate periods in our discussions of ancient egypt. Periods of profound and prolonged disunity are just as much a feature of ancient Egyption as those periods of unified and centralized rule. We shouldn't take eEgypt's fundamental unity for granted or treat it like some base line, given the ancient egyptians themselves did not take it for granted. They knew that order and harmony had an opposite, ispet, meaning chaos and disharmony.
