Douglass's life and writing is a remarkable chronicle of 19th century life in this country. I think about Frederick Douglass all the time. He deserves as like a writer to be an enslaved person prevented by law from learning how to read and write, he says. And he articulated the experience of enslaved people in ways that changed the course of history.
