Schmidt's first major work was not on the new constitution. It was a book about aesthetics as related to politics, political romanticism. Here he attacked the german romantics for refusal to politically commit. He maintained that dictatorial power of some sort was essential in a political system. But distinguished between commissarial dictatorship used to defend the existing constitutional order through temporary suspension and sovereign dictatorships.
