Strong Solos - Volume One
Strong solos is a new series that i'll periodically come back to. Each volume will revolve around a different kind of idea, a different central element. The first strong sollo that i want to talk about is eric shankman's killer guitar solo on the spin doctors 19 91 hit single, two princes. There are probably people who would tell you about subtle differences between theme and variations and motivic development. I use both interchangeably in this episode.
There's nothing like a good instrumental solo—that moment when a lone player stands in the spotlight and takes the helm, leading the band in an uncharted direction. On the first edition of Strong Solos, Kirk takes apart a few of his favorite solos, which a special focus on players who use motivic development, also known as theme and variations.
