Scotland was a very divided kingdom. The highlands remained catholic, mainly gaelic speaking riteso a local celtic language that was unknown in the rest of britain. They continued to follow the customs of a tribal rule and justice dispensed by lairds or their proxies. These areas became comparatively more cultured, more prosperous, more cosmopolitan than most of england.
