All three of us have held organizational roles and responsibilities that rank from engineer, line level manager, VP, business owner. And I think most of us have had the experience that as you move up in organizational hierarchy, the role of a boss changes from manager to person whose job it is to communicate expectations. You find yourself surprised that it is not if you report directly to a CEO, you find yourselves surprised that the CEO's job is not to be your manager, actually, it is to hold the business together.
