The History of the German Coal Industry

Before natural gas, there was a different fuel that Europe relied on: coal. Coal had been used for home heating for centuries but it was the most important fuel of the industrial revolution in the 18th century. After World War II, West Germany continued to rely heavily on coal to rebuild. But cheap oil and gas were coming into the market, which meant that local coal could not compete.
