Joyce has already introduced two sets of images, the father and the woman down the road who sold lemon-plat. Now comes another set, the warm cold motif that will run all through Finnegan's wake. When you wet the bed, first it is warm, then it gets cold. His mother had a nicer smell than his father, she played on the piano, the sailor's hornpipe, for him to dance.
