He became convinced that the labor movement could win nothing but temporary victories until socialism unseated the barons at the very top. When he was released in November 1895, more than 100,000 people swarmed Battery Park to hear him give a speech. In 1898, the Illinois Supreme Court took Pullman the town away from Pullman, the man and it was incorporated into Chicago.
