Most publishers have tried to ban RMT in some way, and after many lawsuits by publishers against the black marketeers. eBay decided to end the listing of in-game assets for sale in 2007 so they've really pushed the RMT market to the fringes,. Most publishers try and keep all the items in gold trades in-game with mixed results. One interesting approach has been Valve's Steam Inventory Service which seeks to provide the marketplace function as a service to Steam publishers.
