P. Law Guo's Nanyao acted as the model tribute state and while he was alive at least relations with Tang China remained quite amicable. But when his son took over a Nanyao they had territorial ambitions and put much less importance on the Tang relationship than his father. The Tang military had to respond to such an act and not in a small way either. 80,000 troops were sent north from Anand to attack Nanyao but between the mountains and the mosquitoes and other infectious diseases this attack on Nanyao ended poorly for the Tang dynasty.
