Montana became the first state to ban the social media platform TikTok, which is a pretty big step in the backlash against this Chinese own platform over concerns about things like data privacy. Montana's governor signed the measure on Wednesday and it takes effect in January of 2024 but people can actually still use TikTok after that. The law would be nullified if TikTok is no longer headquartered in any country designated as a foreign adversary by the US government. Free speech groups like the ACLU have already been vocally criticizing this law because they say it infringes on their rights.
