The History of Telegraphs
The first telegraph was built by the French government in 1790s. They used movable arms that could be rotated to send 94 different symbols. The British immediately ripped off this system, and the Swedes had a very similar system as well. This is for the first time a system that allows you to send information faster than you can send objects.
