A real alligator like the major heap uses are like all heap allocations in sc or ustes, that has to do a certain amount of work. It needs to find somewhere where they fish to avoid using too much memory. One of the advantages of a generational collector is you can defer that work until objects have survived at least one minor collection. That means you use an extremely stupid alligator for the first time round and only if the objects survive, awhile, only then is it worth actually trying to find a permanent home in a fragmented heap for them.
