Mary Shelley's Frankenstein
Shelley wrote the novel before her children and husband and others in her life had died. The story is so familiar I don't think I need to give too much detail, unless it's to separate it out from some of the later adaptations. In Shelley's novel, the scientist Victor Frankenstein creates life in his laboratory. Oddly enough, the story begins on a voyage to the North Pole with a dog sled driven by a gigantic figure. Later, they find a nearly dead man, frozen and emaciated, who tells them the story.
