Shakespeare wouldn't be the enormous literary figure that he is today if we didn't have the folio. He becomes this sort of exceptionalized figure of English identity in the 18th century. Only one other commercial playwright had a similar complete works published and that was Ben Johnson. It's thanks to the publication of this book that the Bard's works have been able to endure as they have across the centuries.
