Supernovae Are Easy to Spot, Even With the Naked Eye
Any star big enough to go supernova is incredibly easy to spot. There are six white dwarfs within 20 light years of earth, close enough to hurt us if they explode. We estimate what explodes within about 10 light years every quarter of a billion years or so - once a galactic year. Stars do move over time and it is likely earth has been hit by supernova at various intensities many times in the past.
