The Enlightenment Philosophy of Nature
Peasants, indigenous people and farmers around the world did not see animals and trees as completely separate from themselves. They saw all these kinds of beings as being within some sort of continuity. When colonists arrived in around the 17th century, one of the things that happens with this Enlightenment philosophy is that you have the body and soul completely distinguished. So, when these terrible calamities overtake Native Americans, colonists would say, oh that's not ours, that's nature. In so many ways we see the legacy of these modes of thinking coming back to haunt us now.
