When we only had three TV networks when those cities were single paper monopoly cities you did need to hold journalists to a high standard because there weren't a lot of alternatives. As media outlets proliferated it became more viable for someone to be totally biased and insane and just scream things that other people in the audience would agree with. So now we to some extent fragmented media and biased media is more transparent maybe you were never actually getting the truth but at least you know that you're being lied to.
