Google’s circular economy | Kate Brandt

CHAPTER

The Circular Data Center Ecosystem

Last year, Google used 8 million megawatt hours of energy. That is more than what it takes to power the city of San Francisco for a whole year. To keep our products and materials in use, we have to keep them in our new machines. We're remanufacturing new servers out of components from old ones. And then when we have hardware left over that we don't need anymore, can wipe it clean, can sell it on secondary markets. In this circular world of the future, almost no new raw materials are mined. Carbon emissions, they're brought to almost zero, and there are no more landfills.
