The Importance of a Ruler

In order for large societies containing thousands of people to be able to work as a cohesive society, the ruler or ruling class had to have worked hard. The value of the individual and what the individual could contribute to his iety started becoming more and more important. So if you had something to contribute to your society, then great stuff, because you can climb the ladder of success. Those who did not have much to contribute could be forced into a life of destitute slavery.
