The Cultural Tightness of South Korea's Democracy
South Korea is one of the tightest societies in Galvan-Datal's international sample. Eilis Evans: Cultural tines is clearly no barrier to contentious politics as shown by South Korea's democratization. But I wonder if there's a threshold effect, individuals who fear social disapproval may be extremely reluctant to speak out. So sympathizers may only grow bolder when confident of wider solidarity and strength in numbers. This may help explain why Japan had no me too. It just didn't reach the necessary critical mass to overcome individual fears of disapproval.
