The Consciousness of Animals and Machines

All mammals share the same basic neuronal hardware that seems critical for consciousness in humans. But it's incredibly hard to come up with 100% confidence about this stuff, especially when we get beyond mammals to insects, to fish, to bacteria. It's very hard even to know whether there is a line to draw or whether consciousness just kind of peat us out into nothingness in a very, very graduated fashion.
