The Origins of Greek Coinage
The main participants in Greek commerce were the class of traders, known collectively as Emporoi. The Athenian state collected a duty on their cargo, both entering and leaving the pyre. This tax was set initially at 1%, then at 2%. By the end of the 5th century BC, this duty tax was earning more than 18,000 talents annually for Athens.
