I think that's part of why the movie is such an effective scott is because it gives you all this direct kind of David McGowan style information about pop culture. The point was that Sam was just on a quest for meaning all along and he just had to realize he was never going to find meaning in any of this stuff. I think we see Sam being thrown through a loop here as I think many viewers are being indicated that they're supposed to follow him but don't pay attention to the specifics.
