You wrote that if we put aside the myth making of modernity, in which humans are triumphantly free of material dependence on plants, and acknowledge the reality of an ever increasing itude to the products of the earth, at the story of the bandines and the nutmeg no longer seems so distant from our present predicament. This seems to challenge the notion that we're less dependent on natural resources than we used to be,. And that technology has removed us, in part, from that dependence.
