What Is the Problem With the Potato?
Frederick's great-grandfather brought potato to Prussia after he had encountered it in Bavaria. Potatoes are not actually very easy to transport, especially in the case of an army. The net caloric value of a potato is 3.6 times that of grain. You could produce 7,200 kilocalories worth of food and potatoes in the same land that you could produce 2,000 for grain.
