The Fetishism of Commodities in Capitalism
In Dost Capitale in the very first volume, Karl Marx introduces this notion of what he calls commodity fetishes. The value of something is determined in pecuniary terms, not whether it's useful or not,. It's all about what it can fetch in the marketplace. In other words, money has this kind of fetishistic quality where we started triggering all kinds of powers to money that it only really has because of us. I think the capitalism is historically unique in this regard.
